It is the spring of 2021. The COVID-19 pandemic is nearing its end. Paul Tyler, a retired U.S. Army Colonel, and his hiking companion, Sammy Smalls, a retired U.S. Army Command Sergeant Major, plan a backpacking trip together. Sammy lost his wife during the pandemic, and the idea of a long hike would fulfill his need for a cathartic experience. Together, the two old soldiers venture into the wilderness of Virginia to seek solace.
On the first night of their hike, they are joined by two young ROTC cadets from a local university who persuade the two old veterans to share their military experiences. As they hike, Paul and Sammy recount their experiences, war stories, and offer advice to these soon-to-be commissioned officers.
First Lieutenant Paul Tyler, a military intelligence officer, is reassigned from his district team in the Mekong Delta and ordered to the provincial capital in Kien Song Province to assume the position of Senior Intelligence Advisor to the Military Assistance Command – Vietnam’s Team 85. He inherits a disjointed intelligence operation that he must repair.
Tyler travels to Saigon monthly to brief General Creighton Abrams, the Commanding General of the MACV, on the province’s intelligence situation. During his stays in Saigon, a friend arranges dates with some of the eligible American women she knows. A torrid romantic relationship develops with Rebecca Lawrence, a Red Cross worker in Saigon.
His efforts back at his Province capital of Moc Loi result in a significant improvement in the intelligence effort and ultimately results in the North Vietnamese commander for the area placing a Five million piaster price on his head – dead-or-alive!
Will Tyler survive this serious threat and will his relationship in Saigon flourish?
