After being expelled from Vietnam in 1971, Captain Paul Tyler enrolls at the University of Nebraska, Omaha, to complete his college education. One day, while walking across the quad, he encounters Cathy Stewart, his former love from Vietnam, and they rekindle their romance.
Shortly after graduating, Paul proposes to Cathy. Following their wedding and honeymoon, Tyler is informed that he must report to the 525th Military Intelligence Group in Vietnam for a third tour, which devastates Cathy. They make a brief visit to Fort Carson, Colorado, before moving into on-post housing while Tyler is deployed.
On a rainy day in Denver, Cathy tearfully bids farewell to Paul as he boards a plane returning to Vietnam. They exchange heartfelt letters during his absence. Paul begins his assignment as an intelligence analyst in Saigon at the headquarters; later he is selected to create a special Long Range Reconnaissance unit in northern Vietnam with a mission to restore agent nets disrupted by the “Easter Offensive”.
Midway through his tour, Paul and Cathy experience a brief but romantic R&R in Hawaii. Paul returns to his duties as a team leader and advisor to the Vietnamese while Cathy returns to Fort Carson, Colorado to await his return.
He and his team are sent on a final mission to reestablish contact with an agent inside North Vietnam. Near their destination, the Paris Accords are announced; his team is ordered to return to South Vietnam without any support for their evacuation. Upon their successful escape and return to South Vietnam, Paul receives a new assignment in Saigon prior to his departure. He is tasked with bringing the ‘colors’ of the 525 MI Group back to the United States for deactivation Consequently Paul becomes one of the last soldiers to depart from Vietnam on 29, 1973.
