This new book is a prequel of the advisor series and it begins with Colonel tyler’s retirement from the US army and his hiring as a JROTC senior army instructor.

While the book is semi-autobiographical it is a novel about teaching military science at a public high school in something called the JROTC program.

This was a prequel because the advisor series begins with Colonel tyler’s retirement from teaching after the death of his wife. After he retires he goes on a hike along the Appalachian Trail with your good friend Sammy smalls. After the completion of his hike he decides to sell the house in Tipton IN and moved to the Shenandoah Valley.

As he is making this move his grandchildren asked him about his assignments in Vietnam. Telling of that tale is the beginning of the advisor series.

I’ll make some comments on my next post about being a senior army instructor and teaching at the high school level. It was an interesting part of my career one that I will never forget.

I’ve already been asked by some of my former students if they’re in the book. I tried to explain to them that the stories are a compilation of hundreds of students that I taught over the years. So while the story may center on a specific individual I can assure you that I’ve had these same occurrence a number of times during my teaching career.

As I explained to the kids, I’ve changed all of the names to protect the innocent and perhaps the guilty. I’ve used fictional names and locations throughout the stories.
